I have realized lately that one aspect of holistic-living is often overlooked....Skincare! So I am going to start introducing some exciting (and totally natural!) alternatives to store-bought beauty products - that will not only save you those dollabillz, but help you to nourish the BIGGEST organ of your body - your skin - without toxic ingredients! (And, I'll only suggest these awesome things that I have personally guinea-pigged for you already!)
So, this week: We're going to look at my new favorite thing - 'NO-POO'ing!" - a.k.a. not using shampoo or conditioner on your hair. (Yes, even products like Burts Bees have chemicals in them!)
Now...I'm going to pull the curtain back on my own practices - since this is a totally judgement free zone! I wash my hair (which is a long mid-back length) about 1x per week. Sometimes more or less depending on the state of the weather, how often I'm working out...etc. Basically, once I notice it's getting to be "the time."
I built up to this over about 2 years of slowly spacing out how often I washed my hair (every other day, every third day, etc.) - and this has added an amazing amount of body and richness to the texture and color. I've never had anyone tell me my hair looked greasy - in fact, I've had friends tell me it DIDN'T if I commented on it to them, and I get a ton of compliments on how well my hair holds it's style when I have it done on set.
If you're reading this right now and saying "HOLD UP GIRL - I just have greasy hair! That's never gonna work for me." Please, allow me to explain...the reason your hair might get so oily if you don't wash it for one day (or even by the end of the day) is that your scalp is finally "allowed" to secrete the natural oils that your hair needs to stay healthy - SO those cells get a little over-excited and produce an excess until they are "allowed" to secrete more naturally. If you start a slow and steady spacing out, this oiliness will be minimal. And, everyone's scalp is different so maybe it will take 6 months, maybe 1 year, etc. But it is MUCH better for your hair to live most of the time in it's natural oils - because that's what your body created them for. Right?
Also, for you friends out there who have dry scalp or dandruff issues, this can really help to lessen and eliminate these symptoms, because you're letting the body do it's thing with very gentle and natural cleansers when you step in.
You can also start by alternating between shampooing/conditioning one day, and simply rinsing your hair with water the next, and build from there.
But anyways, fellow blogger, Marjorie at This Is So Good! reported, that she uses this method almost every day and it's great for her too! So, no matter where you are with your hair washing routine, I highly recommend trying this low-cost, totally natural, awesome method:
What you need:
- A tablespoon measure
- A glass or something to mix your ingredients in
- Baking Soda
- Raw, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar
- Coconut Oil (optional)
- Mix approximately 2 tbsp and 1 cup of water in your mixing paraphernalia (I just eyeball it)
- Pour over your head slowly and massage into the scalp, then down to the ends of the hair.
- Rinse Thoroughly!
- Mix approximately 3-4 tbsp and 1 cup of water (again, eyeballed)
- Pour over your head slowly and massage into the scalp, down to the ends of the hair.
You can also put a tiny bit of coconut oil on to your finger tips once you get out of the shower and apply to the ends of your wet or dry hair. I generally do this because I have very fine hair that has a lot of flyaways no matter what I do the first day or so after washing. You can use Argan Oil too, but I always have Coconut Oil in my house, and it's less expensive, so why not?
Have you tried No-Poo?? Let me Know how it goes for you and leave a comment below!
