The Water Factor: Part 2

Hey Party People! Remember when we chatted about The Water Factor, a few weeks ago? We discussed how the amount of water you need during these hot and humid summer months really comes down to what your individual body needs. Now it's time to take it one step further - how can you make your water taste better AND do more than simply hydrate? Add stuff* to it!!!

*Stuff = fruits, vegetables and herbs. Stuff does NOT mean powders of any kind that someone freeze-dried, added synthetic chemicals, vitamins, and/or a ton of sugar to. Stuff is NOT something that says "healthy," or "natural" on the label and then has ingredients that you can't read on the back.

Disclaimer -- this is not a juice cleanse! That's a topic for another day. These are recipes to help you spruce up plain old water to:

  1. encourage you to drink it instead of other sugary bevvies
  2. help your water do more than hydrate
  3. taste better!

And you know we're all about money saving here on the BHLH blog, so these recipes are all 100% cheap!! As always, go for your ORGANIC versions of these ingredients and use FILTERED water for the most healthy version (when was the last time you changed your Brita filter, btw?). You can even reuse one set of ingredients for 2-3 refills of water.

I highly recommend getting some canning jars - commonly known as Mason Jars - for your water. They're glass (BPA free!), leak proof, and SUPER DUPER CHEAP! You can find them pretty much anywhere - Amazon, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Fishes Eddie (NYC), Bowery Kitchen Supply (NYC)...and they're about $2-$4 each depending on the size, or $12-$15 for a 12-pack.

Okay okay, time to get to the good stuff ---

With all these recipes, I recommend muddling the ingredients in the glass before adding the filtered water. This will open up the oils and flavors in them so they're more tasty and so you're getting all the good oils out of them. You can muddle with a bar muddler, a fork or spoon, or the more fun way is to place the ingredient on one palm and SLAP it a few times with the other (more necessary for your herbs than the fruits).

These recipes are portioned by the pint to liter of water depending on how concentrated you want the flavor.

  1. Happy Belly - filtered water, 3-5 cucumber slices, 3-5 slices lemon, 2-3 orange slices, fresh mint leaves.
    • slims by preventing water retention (cucumber), eases digestion (mint), and helps invigorate the digestive system (lemon), and is a bit of an immune booster (orange)
  2. Sweet Summer Detox - filtered water, 2-3 strawberries, 2-3 watermelon cubes, 1-2 sprigs of rosemary, 2 large leaves of basil, and 1 lemon slice.
    • This is a super hydrating (the water & the watermelon) with the digestive help of lemon.
  3. Green Tea Gooddness - 1 cup of organic green tea (cooled), with muddled 2-3 leaves mint and 2-3 slices cucumber.
    • This can be a little DE-hydrating because of the Green tea, so use sparingly! A good mid-afternoon coffee substitute.
  4. Fat Burner Water - filtered water 2-3 slices grapefruit, 2-3 slices orange or tangerine, 2-3 cucumber slices, 2-3 mint leaves.
    • Grapefruit has been recognized as a great fat burner, coupled with a little immune boosting tangerine.
  5. Clear Skin Fabulousness - filtered water, 1-2 apple slices, 2-3 sliced strawberries, 1-2 lemon slices, 2-3 mint leaves, dash of cinnamon.
  6. Antioxidant Amazingness - 1 cup hibiscus tea (dried Jamaica) cooled, with a small handful of blueberries, and 1-2 lemon slices.
    • Hibiscus tea helps maintain the body temperature in the heat, and has a pleasingly light sour flavor that's great for your Liver!

And now I want to challenge you!! I challenge you to make your own recipe for a fun, delicious detox water and share it here below!
